Design for Safety: From Theory to Future Practice

Abstract:

We will explore how the Construction industry has shifted from a ‘silo based’ approach towards a collaborative culture. This always existed at a site level but not always in the way businesses have engaged. The use of clear project ‘gateways’ by all involved ensures clarity within the delivery process and helps avoid wasted effort and missed opportunity and future proof the built environment.

The number of fatalities within the UK and European construction industry has greatly reduced over the years, primarily via technical innovation and behavioural change. Our focus now needs to be extended to cover how the industry upholds safety of not only construction workers but also the safety those that use and maintain the built environment that has been created.

This presentation will show that through simple steps that engage all ‘duty holders’ major improvements to minimise risk can be achieved during construction and throughout the life of a building, to avoid legacy issues arising during occupation, operation & maintenance, and all the way through to decommissioning and deconstruction.

At a time when the building sector is going through huge change to address the global climate emergency there are many parrels that can be drawn and opportunities for improvement that can be taken by appreciating this cradle to grave approach to project / building management related safety.
